karo parysian has used judo very effectively in the cage/UFC. you have to be an elite athlete in any art to be able to employ it effectively in a real life situation or in the ring. Too many poorly trained practitioners of many arts or disciplines enter the UFC ‘claiming” expertise in a discipline and then they lose and people say that art sucks. The more proficient fighter always wins; irregardless of the art they represent. styles don’t win fights; fighters win fights.
Hell, even in everyday use Judo would be useful. (for example, learning how to fall so that you don’t break a hip or bust your head open. lol )
I bought 2 of his DVDs years ago…”Basic Judo” and “Basic Grappling” — awesome stuff. I was able to make foot sweeps and throws alot easier in karate after watching the first dvd ( guess he just explained how to do them better than my karate instructor ).
I fought Mike a few times in New Jersey when we were kids. He was a left-handed jodoka, which drove me crazy. Beat him a couple of times, and he beat me, too. Of course, he went on to be a great champion while I did extremely well as a kid but hung it up at 13 while he went on to greatness. Maybe the best American judoka ever.
wow imagine that shit in a street fight. LEGENDARY! Judo is the balls!
looks like a left tai otoshi into juji gatame.
MIKE SWAIN is a BAD ASS! Awesome judoka!
What does a situation in “the street” and MMA have to do with one another? A self defense situation vs. an intense physical sport? The UFC is NOT the “end all of martial arts”. Its an incredibly intense sport, full of talented competitors. In the street? The Judo guy would walk away from it and the MMA fighter could go to jail for 1) beating the person to a pulp 2) labeled legally as a “psychopath” for lack of self control. The ring allows for anti-social behavior, society does not. Different
But how does it work on the street? It hasn’t had alot of success in MMA, except the very times it catches a fighter by surprise. The new guy the UFC acquired, Yoshihiro Akiyama, is a former Judo Olympian or at least held some major championship titles. Satoshi Ishii is another one that joined MMA from the Olympics recently. He completely embarrassed the current UFC LHW Machida in sparring.
maxbigwood…because Mike is one of Matt’s coaches. He trains in submissions and grappling under Mike.
MPA 2000- Mike Swain is one of Matt Hughes coaches. He has many and he goes to Mike for some judo training.
